COMMODIANUS ou COMMODIEN DE GAZA (IIIe-IVe s.)

La critique n’a pas réussi à déterminer avec certitude l’époque où a vécu Commodien de Gaza. La thèse qui plaçait son œuvre après 440 a été controversée; on parle tantôt du IIIe siècle, tantôt du IVe (et même du Ve), mais la discussion reste ouverte. Pourquoi le nomme-t-on Commodien de Gaza? Parce qu’en tête de la dernière pièce des Instructiones , là où il se nomme lui-même, figurent ces deux mots: Nomen Gasaei , c’est-à-dire, «nom de l’homme de Gaza» (quoique cette signature puisse encore avoir une signification autre qu’ethnique). Ce païen converti au christianisme laisse une œuvre fort modeste. Il est l’auteur de deux poèmes: Les Instructiones (qui comprennent quatre-vingts pièces) et le Carmen apologeticum (ensemble de mille soixante vers groupés deux à deux). L’esprit qui anime les deux ouvrages est le même: dans les deux cas, il s’agit de décourager les ennemis du christianisme et de ranimer la foi des chrétiens parfois oublieux de leurs devoirs. La langue dans laquelle s’exprime Commodien est barbare, il maltraite l’hexamètre, non pour s’adapter à un public populaire, comme on a pu le penser, mais plus vraisemblablement malgré lui, par méconnaissance de la langue latine.
